This screen print is intended to criticize the normalization of petroleum use in modern societies, whether in plastics or fuels — a recurring theme in Shepard FAIREY’s work. Gas Pump (2016) revisits the aesthetics of vintage gas pumps to turn them into a striking visual symbol. The design often plays on the contrast between industrial nostalgia and contemporary critique of consumerism. Clean lines and bold color palettes enhance the graphic impact of the depicted object. The piece reflects on our energy dependence and its environmental consequences. Through this work, the artist OBEY transforms an everyday object into a powerful, meaningful icon.
