KAWS SHARE stood as the giant guardian of New York’s iconic Rockefeller Center from August to October 2021. Proudly positioned on the Center Plaza, it welcomed visitors to the unique complex of 19 buildings, constructed in 1929 by businessman John D. Rockefeller. The installation coincided with the KAWS exhibition “What Party” at the Brooklyn Museum, which ran until September 5, 2021.
The nearly 5.5-meter-tall bronze sculpture featured KAWS’s iconic character “COMPANION”, holding a miniature pink “BFF” in its left hand — the “COMPANION” and “BFF,” a furry imitation of Elmo first introduced by the artist in 2016, are two of KAWS’s recurring favorite motifs.
“I was thinking about what this area (the Rockefeller Center’s Center Plaza) meant to me,” KAWS said. “The verticality of all the architecture, and visiting Rockefeller Center as a child, looking up and feeling overwhelmed — I wanted a sculpture that could relate to those feelings.”
In SHARE, the COMPANION character represents feelings of sadness, fear, and isolation after long periods of lockdown during the pandemic, while the BFF doll it holds suggests the comfort many of us need.
