Hypnotic Vienna was produced in 2008 by street artist Invader. It consists of 204 micro-ceramic tiles. It exists in 150 numbered but unsigned copies, as well as 30 numbered and signed copies. Kit #9 (Invader Kit number 9, IK9, or "Hypnotic Vienna") was created in reference to the Invaded Bridge installation at the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna, Austria.
The Street Art Passage takes visitors through Vienna’s museum district, the MuseumsQuartier. This tunnel was “invaded” by Invader. The large blue-and-black mosaic creates a surreal experience for passersby, reminiscent of the world of the famous video game, while contrasting with the traditional museums nearby.
At the time, its alias achieved a new record at the Artcurial Urban Art sale in 2019. The work, measuring 165 × 236 cm, was sold for €356,200, including fees.
Starting in the year 2000, the street artist Invader began selling ready-to-use invasion kits on his website. These are artworks—pre-assembled mosaics made of around one hundred tiles, packaged in protective anti-static bags, ready to be installed anywhere one wishes. The original intention was to allow anyone to take part in the invasion, giving everyone the possibility of having an Invader piece at home, in their street, or on their building. The kits even bear the inscription “Bonne invasion.”
However, because these invasion kits were produced in limited quantities, each with a unique identifying number—and some even signed by the artist—they have become collectible objects whose value has steadily increased, especially over the past four or five years. Very few have actually been installed in public spaces, and they now exist primarily in private collections.
