Paint It Black is a screen print by Shepard Fairey that critiques the power of the oil lobby by depicting a hand holding a can of black paint labeled “oil-based policy.” The black paint symbolizes how pro-carbon policies obscure the truth. The globe in the background reminds us that this disinformation affects the entire planet and threatens ecological balance. The slogan “Cover it all” suggests that these strategies aim to “paint” the whole world black, imposing their destructive vision. Finally, the fact that proceeds from certain editions are donated to environmental organizations like 350.org demonstrates that OBEY combines his art with concrete activism.
